The mapping

In Spring 2012, Transeuropéennes and the Anna Lindh Foundation have published an unprecedented document, the Mapping of translation in the Euro-Mediterranean (in French, English and Arabic).

Resulting from a two year long collective work, the Mapping of translation holds up a mirror to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership : in the light of translation, what is the reality of our exchanges?

It clarifies the crucial role of the translation of knowledge in human and social sciences, literature and theatre in the development of an interculturality, whilst bringing to light the numerous difficulties that it poses in economic, cultural and political terms.

It prepares the ground for a Euro-Mediterranean programme, of a structuring nature, nourished by qualitative and quantitative analysis (with hitherto non-existent statistical data), and carries a political vision of translation, as a definition of the construction of the common.

The mapping provides a radically new approach, since it takes into account the whole chain of translation, that is to say all the actors involved in the process of translation: authors, translators, publishers, booksellers, librarians, literary critics and funding programs.

The mapping of translation in the Euro-Mediterranean region was conducted with CEVBIR, the European Council of Literary Translators Associations’ (CEATL), the Escuela de Translators de Toledo, the King Abdul-Aziz Foundation, Next page Foundation, the Index Translationum (UNESCO), Literature Across Frontiers, Università degli Studi di Napoli l'Orientale... and was coordinated by Transeuropéennes.

It has benefited from the support of the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the dialogue between cultures, the Ministry of Culture and Communication, and has received support from the Institut français and the Conseil régional d’île-de-France.

In order to debate it publicly, several conferences and seminars were organized following its release: June 26, 2012, at Bozar, Brussels; September 26, in Paris, at the Comédie française - Theâtre du Vieux-Colombier, in January 2013 in Rabat, at the National Library of Morocco, then in Amman, Madrid, Beirut.

Join us on the Facebook group of "Translating in the Mediterranean" to debate about the mapping.
